Art League is delighted to help sponsor the KIA’s Joy Light Lecture which will feature Dr. Robert Mintz, Deputy Director of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. With a collection of more than 20,000 artworks, the museum celebrates the importance of Asian and Asian American artists. This program is free and open to the public.

Abbas Daneshvari: American and European Art in the Crucible of Postmodernism

Reception following lecture

Explore the cultural transformations anticipated and reflected in the arts of Europe and the United States from the Surrealists to the Postmodernists.

Professor Abbas Daneshvari is the former Chair of the Department of Art and Professor of Art History at California State University, Los Angeles. He is the author of Amazingly Original: Contemporary Iranian Art at Crossroads as well as numerous publications on various aspects of Islamic art’s iconography.

Jonah Elijah: Beyond Perspective

A native of Houston’s Third Ward, Texas, Jonah’s work transcends time, drawing upon his personal memories and upbringing. He delves deep into identity, through mediums of portraiture, language, and mass media engaging with the past, employing found objects charged with meaning, such as sneakers, televisions, and artifacts, as symbolic metaphors for the dynamic experiences they represent.

Mark Joshua Epstein: Works on Paper

Reception following Lecture

Epstein’s work formulates an abstract visual language embedded with markers of personal history and cultural identity. The simultaneously discordant and harmonious shapes that play across the surfaces of his work encode reference points drawn from aspects of his Jewish and queer identities, inviting questions about the coordinates where they may intersect.

Eric Souther: Kinetic Imaging: New materialism, Anthropology, Ritual, Deep time, and Toolmaking

Reception following Lecture

Using a multiplicity of disciplines and pathways, including interactive installation, audio-visual performance, single-channel video, and software, Souther coalesces technological assemblages that form emergent systems or software for exploring relations and result in unexpected images/meaning making.
